What is Safety and Health Committee?
A safety and health committee is a collaborative organization in the workplace that is responsible for developing and upholding a safe working environment. It usually consists of equal representation from management and employees.
Under OSHA (Amendment) 2022, workplaces with 40 or more employees are legally required to establish this committee. It purposes are to assist companies in fulfilling requlatory requirements, promote systematic hazard management and enhance organizational safety culture.
Safety and Health Committee Key Responsibilities
1. Identifying hazards and ensuring compliance through workplace audits and inspections;
2. Evaluating complaints, near-misses, and accident reports to suggest remedial measures;
3. Creating awareness campaigns, training courses, and safety regulations to create a proactive safety culture;
4. Encouraging awareness raising initiatives to improve safety culture;
5. Monitoring the effectiveness of safety measures and advising on improvements.
